The Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) Warhawks men’s basketball team experienced a challenging 2025–26 season, but it was also a year filled with opportunities to learn, improve, and build for the future. Competing in the highly competitive Gulf South Conference (GSC), the Warhawks faced some of the strongest NCAA Division II basketball programs in the country. Although the team finished with a 5–23 overall record and a 3–19 conference record, the season was about much more than wins and losses. Every game gave the players valuable experience, and the coaching staff continued working to develop a program that can compete at a higher level in the years ahead.
Throughout the season, the Warhawks showed determination and resilience. Even when facing teams with more experience and deeper rosters, AUM continued to compete with energy and effort. Several games were decided by only a few possessions, proving that the team had the ability to challenge strong opponents. While they were unable to consistently finish games with victories, the players gained confidence and experience that should help them improve in the future. The coaching staff emphasized teamwork, discipline, and continuous improvement, knowing that rebuilding a successful program takes time and commitment.
One of the biggest positives from the season was the development of younger players. Many athletes received significant playing time, allowing them to gain experience against some of the best competition in NCAA Division II basketball. That experience is expected to benefit the team as those players return with a better understanding of the speed, physicality, and intensity of conference play. The coaching staff also focused on improving the team’s defense, rebounding, and offensive execution throughout the season, creating a stronger foundation for future success.
Looking ahead to the 2026–27 season, expectations are much higher around the program. With several returning players, the Warhawks are expected to have better chemistry and leadership than they had a year ago. Returning athletes have spent the offseason improving their strength, conditioning, and basketball skills, while the coaching staff has worked to bring in talented newcomers through recruiting. Those additions should provide more depth and competition at every position, giving AUM a better chance to compete every night.
Another reason for optimism is the leadership of head coach Michael Cheaney and his coaching staff. Their focus has remained on building a culture of accountability, hard work, and perseverance. Rather than dwelling on last season’s record, the coaches have challenged the team to use those experiences as motivation. Every practice, workout, and offseason training session has been designed to prepare the Warhawks for a stronger and more successful season.
The Gulf South Conference will continue to present major challenges because it features several nationally respected basketball programs. Every conference game requires a high level of preparation and execution, meaning AUM must consistently play its best basketball to compete. However, the experience gained last season should help the Warhawks handle those challenges with greater confidence. If the team can improve its defense, limit turnovers, rebound more effectively, and execute its offense in close games, it has the potential to earn more conference victories and compete for a spot in the Gulf South Conference Tournament.
Fans and members of the AUM community are excited to see what the Warhawks can accomplish this season. The support from students, alumni, and local fans continues to motivate the team, creating an exciting atmosphere at home games. Basketball has always been an important part of campus life, bringing people together to cheer for the Warhawks and celebrate their achievements.
While no one can predict exactly how the season will unfold, there is plenty of reason for optimism. The returning players have valuable experience, the newcomers bring fresh talent, and the coaching staff has continued working to strengthen every aspect of the program. If the team stays healthy, continues to improve throughout the season, and plays together with confidence and determination, the AUM Warhawks have the opportunity to take a significant step forward.
