Opinion: I’m Buying the Hype Around AUM Basketball—And You Should Too

Every preseason, there’s one team people refuse to believe in until it’s too late.
They’ll call them “surprising.”
They’ll say, “Nobody saw this coming.”
But if you paid attention from the beginning, you knew the signs were there.
I’m not waiting until February to jump on the bandwagon.
I’m buying stock in AUM men’s basketball right now.
Not because I know they’ll win the Gulf South Conference.
Because I believe they’re building the kind of program that can consistently compete for it.
Stop Looking at the Name on the Jersey
One of the biggest mistakes fans make is judging programs by reputation instead of reality.
They assume traditional powers will always stay on top.
They assume smaller programs have a ceiling.
College basketball doesn’t work that way anymore.
Roster turnover is constant.
The transfer portal changes everything.
One recruiting class can reshape a season.
One experienced veteran can change a locker room.
The gap between “good” and “great” has never been smaller.
That’s why AUM has an opportunity.
Winning Starts Long Before Tip-Off
Everyone sees the two hours on game night.
Nobody sees the months before.
The conditioning.
The early-morning workouts.
The film sessions.
The extra shooting after practice.
Those are the moments that determine whether a team folds under pressure or rises above it.
The best programs prepare for success long before success arrives.
If AUM has done that work, the results will take care of themselves.
The Warhawks Need an Identity
Every championship-caliber team has one.
You know exactly what you’re getting when you play them.
Maybe it’s relentless defense.
Maybe it’s elite ball movement.
Maybe it’s physical rebounding.
Maybe it’s a fast-paced offense that never lets you breathe.
Whatever AUM chooses to be, it has to commit to it.
The worst thing a basketball team can be is forgettable.
Here’s What I Want to See
I don’t care if the Warhawks score 90 points every night.
I don’t care if they lead the conference in three-pointers.
I care about consistency.
Can they defend with the same energy on the road?
Can they rebound when shots aren’t falling?
Can they execute out-of-timeout plays in crunch time?
Championship basketball isn’t flashy.
It’s dependable.
Why the Student Section Matters
This is where I challenge the AUM community.
Show up.
Not just for rivalry games.
Not just when the team is on a winning streak.
Create an atmosphere where opponents know they’ll have to fight for every possession.
Players notice it.
Coaches notice it.
Recruits notice it.
Home-court advantage isn’t created by the arena.
It’s created by the people inside it.
Final Take
Maybe I’m early.
Maybe I’m wrong.
But I’d rather believe in a program before everyone else catches on than pretend I saw it coming after the fact.
AUM men’s basketball has a chance to take another step forward.
Whether that step becomes a leap depends on discipline, leadership, and consistency—not preseason predictions.
I’m buying the hype.
Now it’s up to the Warhawks to prove that investment was worth it.
