There are a lot of things a basketball team can survive over the course of a season.
A cold shooting night.
An untimely injury.
A rough first quarter.
Even a difficult stretch of the schedule.
What teams can’t survive for long is a lack of toughness.
That’s why, as AUM women’s basketball prepares for another season, I keep coming back to one word: toughness.
Not the kind that’s measured by technical fouls or highlight-reel blocks.
The kind that’s measured when no one is watching.
Tough Teams Don’t Flinch
Every season has moments that define it.
Maybe it’s a six-point deficit late in the fourth quarter.
Maybe it’s an overtime game on the road.
Maybe it’s a stretch where nothing seems to go right.
Those moments reveal a team’s identity.
Do they get frustrated?
Do they point fingers?
Or do they settle down, trust each other, and find a way to compete?
The best teams rarely panic.
They simply keep playing.
Winning the Little Moments
Basketball games aren’t decided only by the biggest plays.
Sometimes they’re decided by the smallest ones.
A player boxing out instead of watching the shot.
A guard diving for a loose ball.
A veteran calming down a younger teammate after a turnover.
Those moments don’t make highlight reels, but they often change games.
Over the course of a season, they change records.
Every Team Faces Adversity
No team goes through an entire season without setbacks.
There will be nights when shots won’t fall.
There will be games where the opponent simply plays better.
The difference is how a team responds.
Championship-caliber programs don’t allow one loss to become three.
They don’t let frustration linger.
They learn, adjust, and move forward.
That’s a habit every successful program develops.
Leadership Looks Different Every Year
Leadership doesn’t always belong to the oldest player.
Sometimes it’s the point guard who keeps everyone organized.
Sometimes it’s the forward willing to defend the opponent’s best scorer.
Sometimes it’s the player coming off the bench who keeps the energy high.
Whatever form it takes, leadership has to become visible before conference play begins.
Every winning team has someone players naturally follow when games get tight.
A Program Worth Watching
Women’s college basketball continues to grow across the country.
The level of competition gets better every year.
That presents a challenge—but also an opportunity.
Programs willing to embrace that challenge will keep moving forward.
Those content with staying the same will quickly get left behind.
AUM has the chance to establish itself as a program known for discipline, effort, and resilience.
That’s a reputation every coach wants.
Final Take
Talent will always matter.
So will coaching.
But if you ask me what gives AUM women’s basketball its best chance to exceed expectations this season, my answer isn’t complicated.
Be the tougher team.
Play harder for longer.
Win the possessions that don’t show up in the headlines.
Because by the time March arrives, the teams still playing usually have one thing in common.
They weren’t always the most talented.
They were the toughest.
